Many users like to launch the WinTD application by double clicking on a tournament or master player file (alternatively, clicking the file and doing an "Open" operation), and WinTD sets itself up to be the default program for opening all the WinTD-specific file types:

PTOZ (new style tournament file)

PTO (old style tournament file)

PPLZ (new style master player file)

PPL (old style master player file)

PTLZ (new style master team file)

PTL (old style master team file)

Note, however, that the operating system (not WinTD itself) is what determines which application gets opened on a double-click. If you have another previously installed application which already has the "double-click rights" to a file type, installing new software will not override that. So far as we know, those six file types are not used by any other software besides WinTD, but if you have an earlier version of WinTD or installed the WinTD trial, those would (if not uninstalled) maintain their status as default program. If you have installed the trial license and you want to install the regular licensed software, you should uninstall the trial, preferably before doing the new installation; that way, there is no installed program which is associated with any of the above file types.

If you want to keep both newer and older licensed versions in place (5.0 and 4.2, for instance), and you want to be able to launch the program by double-clicking , you have to let the operating system know which of the two versions to use. Since 4.2 almost certainly will have been installed first, it would be the default program for the three file types that it knows about (the old styles: PTO, PPL and PTL) but would not for the three that were introduced later (PTOZ, PPLZ and PTLZ) and it can't open those at all.

Note that you can always launch the version you want directly and use File>Recent Files or File>Open to open the desired file.

To set your system up so that opening a PTO, PPL and PTL will open 5.0 instead:

For Windows (using Settings)

There are two methods for resetting the default program for a file type. The simplest is (note: these are from the Windows desktop, not WinTD)

Go to Start menu>Settings>Apps>Default Apps

From that page, select Choose default apps by file type. This lists the file types in alphabetical order. The WinTD file types all start with P's so scroll down to find those. If you click on the program icon on (for instance) the .pto line, it will show you the applications which have told the operating system that they can open a pto. If there is an issue with double click rights, it should show you (at least) two versions of WinTD. If it has been picking the one you don't want, pick the second on that list instead. Correct the other types as well.

For Windows (using Open With...)

Right-click on a WinTD document file that you want to open. This should open a popup menu for the file. Find the Open With... operation on that. Do not choose a version of WinTD at this point (that will just open this file, this one time). Instead, Choose another app... That should show one version of WinTD under the Keep using this app and another under Other options. Choose the one under Other options and then check the Always use this app to open xxx files.

For Macintosh (using Open With...)

Right-click (or Ctrl-click) on a WinTD document file that you want to open. This should open a popup menu for the file. Find the Open With... operation. On that, it should show one version of WinTD as the (Default). Choose Other... instead and select the newer version of WinTD from the Applications directory. Click on the Always Open With box at the bottom.
