How To: Create and Manage an Accumulated Points System

Home Page

← Previous Next →

WinTD allows you to keep track of the total number of points scored by players across a number of tournaments, or to accumulate "Grand Prix" or "tour" points as long as they are a function of points scored, and not placement. Follow these steps:

1.Create an (otherwise) empty window in a spreadsheet, with at least the columns Name and Pts. You can include other WinTD fields like St (state), Rate (rating), Team, Club, Gr (prize group). Fields which don't match WinTD field names can also be included; WinTD won't fill them in or alter them. Save the file, then open it as a Data Window in WinTD using Data>Open Data Table. If all you are doing is adding up raw point totals, you can skip to step 3.

2.Create a points lookup table, again in a spreadsheet. This should have (at least) three fields, titled ID, Pts and Value. ID is a character field which allows you to group several related tables (indexed, for instance, by the number of rounds). Pts is the number of points scored and Value is the number of points to be awarded for that. See the example below. Save it from the spreadsheet, and open it in WinTD using Data>Open Data Table. Bring this window to the front (if it isn't there already) and do Data>Set as Point Lookup.

3.Open a Player Window listing the players whose point totals are to be updated. Bring the target Data Window from step #1 to the front, and then do Data>Update Points… If you have set a point lookup table (step #2), you will be asked which ID to use. WinTD will check through the player records and the existing Data Window. If the player is already in your points window, the "Pts" information in it will be updated. If you didn't use a lookup table, the points scored will be added on; if you did use a lookup table, the lookup value for the points scored will be added on. If the player isn't in the points window, a new record will be appended to it, the information covered by the fields included in the window will be copied into it, and the "Pts" information will be initialized based upon the results.

4.Repeat step 3 for different sections or tournaments. When you're doing, save the Data Window.

For future updates, you'll need to

1.Do Data>Open Data Table with the points files and the lookup table (if needed).

2.Select the lookup table and do Data>Set as Point Lookup. Then Step 3 as above.

This is set up with ID showing the number of rounds. Thus a player in a four round tournament scoring 2.0 will get 10 tour points. A player in a five round scoring 4.5 gets 70. You would have to make sure that you put in an ID of 4 when processing a four round tournament and an ID of 5 when doing a five rounder.
