How To: Create Reports in HTML (Web) Format

Home Page

← Previous Next →

WinTD makes it very easy for you to create reports in HTML (HyperText Markup Language) format for posting to a web site. In fact, anything that can be displayed in a Games, Players, Master Player, Team, Reports or Data window can be exported to as an HTML table. There are two ways to do this.

Exporting Player Data for One or More Sections

If you want a quick way to export the player data for one or more sections, use the operation Reports>Export to Web operation. Here's how it works:

1.Select one or more sections from your Sections Window then do Reports>Export to Web.

2.WinTD will bring up a list of the Player Window Styles available in your current preference set (see Change Layout dialog box for more on styles). Select the style you want to use for this report, and click on OK.

3.WinTD will then prompt you for a name for the new HTML file.

The resulting file will list the name and dates of the tournament, followed by a list of all the sections in the report. This is followed by the lists of player information for each of those sections. The section names at the top will be hyperlinks, so you anyone viewing the web page can quickly jump down the page to the player list for a specific section.

Exporting Data (Player and Other) from a Single Window

If you want to export the contents of any single window (including Player, Master Player, Report, Team, Games or Data windows), you can use the File>Export operation. Here are the basic steps:

1.Display in a window the information you want to export. For example, you might use Reports>Show Prize Lists to create a Report Window displaying prize recipients, or Section>List Players to display a Players Window listing all the players. For Players, Master Player, Game and Team Windows, you can use Edit>Change Layout to display the information in the desired format. When you do steps 2 through 5, the resulting HTML file will contain the information exactly as displayed in the window. For example, if you want to export a cross table, use the Section>List Players operation to display a Players Window and then use Edit>Change Layout to select the "Cross Table" style (note that the  displays a player list in cross-table format).

2.Select the File>Export operation.

3.In the operating system file dialog box, use the "Save File as Type" field to select the "HTML(*.HTML)" choice.

4.Use the other fields to specify the destination and filename. WinTD will suggest an extension of .html. You should use this extension (or .shtml) if you want browser programs to recognize the file.

5.Click on OK to export the file.

Notes

With either method, the resulting file will be a complete HTML document which can be immediately posted to a web site or viewed locally with a browser without any further modification. However, you can also use a text-editor or HTML-editing program to edit the file if you wish.

Simple HTML files, such as those created by WinTD, consist of ordinary text plus special "tags" that identify elements of a Web page. As noted above, the HTML files created by the File>Export operation are complete documents that can be posted on a web site or viewed locally using a  browser, without requiring any additional editing, or any knowledge of HTML. However, if you are at least somewhat familiar with HTML, or have access to programs designed to create and edit HTML files, you can also easily edit the files to add to or modify the information. WinTD organizes the information into HTML Tables, which provides for easy readability in a format similar to what you see on the screen in WinTD.
