How To: Enter Game Results (Quick Entry Keys)

← Previous Next →

The "Quick Entry Keys" are usually the fastest way to enter results for a series of games. You just select a game and hit W, L, D to enter the result (win, loss, draw) for the White player. Use F for a forfeit for either player, N to enter "no result" (to skip over a game which has no recorded result) . You can keep hitting W, L, D, F, or N to enter results for each successive game in the list. The alternative method is using the Game Results dialog box, but it's used more often for correcting results than for original entry.

Here's the step-by-step procedure for using the Quick Entry Keys:

1.Switch to or open a Games Window for the current round (use Section>List Games-Current Round to display a list of games in a new Games Window).

2.From the games list, select the first game for which you want to enter a result (see selecting items).

3.Enter the result for White by hitting the W (for a win), L (for a loss), or D (for a draw) key on the keyboard. (The keys don't have to be shifted: w, l and d work just as well). The Games Window will immediately update to reflect the entered result. Forfeits are discussed in the notes below. To skip a game and go on to the next, just hit N for "No Result".

4.WinTD automatically moves the focus to the next game in the window, so you can again hit W, L, or D to enter a result (or N for no result) for that game. Continue entering results as needed.

If you want to skip a few games, you cannot simply cursor down to a game farther down the list and then keep hitting Quick Keys. Instead, you must either:

Use the N key to enter no result for each game you want to skip, or

Use the mouse or the space bar to select the next game for which you want to enter a result and begin using the Quick Keys again.

This is a failsafe against entering incorrect results if you accidentally hit a cursor key.

Forfeits

To enter a forfeit (for either or both players), hit an F. (Remember that a forfeit is an unplayed game—a loss due to a "time forfeit" is just a regular loss). WinTD will immediately pop up a Game Results dialog box. Pick the correct forfeit result. This will automatically check the withdrawal box for the player(s) forfeiting. If you don't want to withdraw a forfeiting player, simply uncheck this before exiting the dialog box. When you click OK on the dialog box, WinTD will go to the next line in the Games Window so you can continue to enter scores.

Verifying Results

If you use the Quick Entry keys on a game which already has a different result, WinTD will beep at you and pop up a Game Results dialog box if you are trying to change a result. This makes it easy to use a second pass through the Games Window to verify your first set of results: when you're done entering the scores, go to the top and select the first game again. Begin entering the results again. (If you can translate wins to losses on the fly, you might want to work down the Black score column on the second pass). If you get through the entire window without a problem, you almost certainly have put the scores in correctly.

Correcting Errors

If you make a mistake along the way and get the scoresheet and the window out of sync (you skip a game or enter a game twice), find the spot where the error occurred. Either manually fix the remaining games (see How To: Enter Game Results (Dialog Box)), or, if there are enough games left to warrant using Quick Keys, select the games from the error to the end of the window, and use the Games>Clear Results operation. You can then use Quick Keys to redo the results. Note that you have to use Clear Results if you want to use Quick Keys on those games, because WinTD will not let you simply fix a result by typing a new score over it (as discussed above).

Team Tournaments

You can use this method to enter results for a match in a Team Tournament. This will set the outcome of the match as a whole, but leaves the individual game results undetermined. This will allow you to pair the next round right away (if the pairings are, as is typical, based upon match points and not game points). At some point, you should be sure to go back and enter the individual game results (see How To: Enter Scores in Team Sections).

Non-Matching Results

If you need a game to show results which don't match up (win for one player, draw for the other, for instance), you need to take special steps. See How To: Enter Non-matching Results.
