How To: Pair Across Sections

Home Page

← Previous Next →

To pair two players across sections, you need to add one of the players to the other's section. (Or you might need to add both to an Additional Rated Games section). Decide in which section (which we will call the target section) the game will be played. (Generally, this is the higher of the two sections). Then:

1.Create a Players Window for the other section.

2.Select the player who is being "moved".

3.Do the operation Players>Cross Section Entry... This will pop up the following dialog

4.Choose the section in which this player will play this round (only). If a player is permanently switching sections, see How To: Reenter Players. A copy of the player's record will be added to the target section.

5.The player you have just crossed into the new section will typically play the player in the target section who had a bye, though you might also pair him or her against a player who is known to have a no-show opponent. Create a Games Window that lists the game that you want to change to match up the crossed player, such as

6.Click on the game, and do the operation Games>Correct the Players.... (How to: Correct Pairings). Choose the crossed player as the opponent, and fix the board number and colors if necessary. When you do this, it will ask "Should Capablanca, Joe be made active again?". Answer No. We don't want the cross section paired player to be active in the new section—he's there for one round and one round only, and will be listed (in the new section) as "checked out" or withdrawn. Make sure you don't do anything to change that or he will get paired in a subsequent round in both sections.

7.The player who was cross-section paired now won't have a result in his original section, only in the new one. You need to decide how to handle that. The typical solution is to put the game into the higher section, so the game counts for score for the player naturally in that section, while giving the player from the lower rated section a full point bye in his original section.
