Menus / Data/Graphics Menu |
The Data/Graphics menu provides a number of Wizards for reading data into memory, doing transformations, and many other data-related operations.
The Calendar Wizard provides an easy way to enter the desired periodicity and starting date for the current session. Note: If you will be using one of the Data Wizards, there is no need to do the Calendar Wizard—that function is incorporated into the Data Wizards as well.
The Data Wizards simplify the process of setting up your RATS session, including setting the CALENDAR and ALLOCATE commands, opening a data file, and reading in the data.
If you will be working with a RATS format file, first do File—Open RATSData to specify the data file and select the series you want to read in, then do the Data (RATS Format) Wizard to read in the data.
If you will be working with any other file format, just select the Data (Other Formats) Wizard.
Create Series (Data Editor)
This opens a Series Editing Window which you can use to type (or paste) data into a new series, and then save that series in memory.
You can use this Wizard to generate trend series, seasonal and 0/1 dummies, or a series of draws from a random normal distribution.
This provides a convenient way to do a variety of data transformations, from taking logs or square roots to generating growth rates, seasonal dummies, and more.
The Differencing Wizard allows you to difference series using regular and/or seasonal differences.
The Filter/Smooth Wizard implements several types of time-series filters.
You can use this to extract means, variances, fractiles, and extreme values from moving windows of data.
The X11 Wizard implements the X11 seasonal adjustment process. Note: This feature is only supported in the Professional version of RATS.
This generates a GRPARM instruction, allowing you to set the font, style, and size of graph labels.
You can use the Graph Wizard to generate time series graphs.
This Wizard generates an X-Y scatter plot.
Data Browsers
These operations provides direct internet access to the FRED economic database provided by St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank. The first is for the main US economic database, while the second is for the various other databases available.
This downloads the Main Economic indicators data from the OECD's web site, creating a set of RATS format files.
Haver DLX...
(Windows, Pro version only). This opens a Series List Window showing the contents of an already-open Haver DLX database file. From this window, you can view/graph data, bring series into memory, or export series to another file. Note: You must do OPEN HAVER databasename prior to selecting this operation.
FAME Database...
(Windows, UNIX, Pro version only). This opens a dialog box you can use to open a FAME database stored on your computer or connect to a database stored on a remote server. As with the Haver operation, this displays a Series List Window showing the contents of the FAME database.
