You pair teams exactly as you would individuals in a regular tournament (using Section-Pair a Round...). Typically, either an alphabetical pairing list or board by board pairing sheet is posted to let the players know their pairings. However, the scores are usually entered in special report forms, which can be created by Reports-Print Team Results Sheets from the game window. These are used because the individual game results are important, and because line-ups may change from round to round.
Your Games Window will list the team versus team pairings. To enter results:
- Double-click on a game in the Games Window. WinTD will bring up the Board Results Dialog Box, rather than the Game Results dialog.
- In the Board Results dialog, first, make sure that you have the correct line-ups, then enter the board-by-board results of the match (you can use the Quick Keys here, just like you do in a Game Window for individual tournaments). Click on OK.
- WinTD will display the Game Results Dialog Box for the match as a whole. It will automatically compute and display the correct result based on the board-by-board results. Verify the result and click on OK to continue.
Note that you can also use Quick Keys to enter results for team matches directly from the Games Window. This will set the result of the match, but leave the individual game results undetermined. You can then go back later and enter the individual game results.
In general, though, we recommend that you use the method described above (entering game results first), because it is less error-prone.
Notes
- For team sections, the Game Results dialog has an extra button labeled "Board Results". You can click on this button to bring up the Board Results dialog if you need to view, enter, or change individual game results.
- If you double-click on a match for which you have already entered board results, WinTD will display the Game Results dialog box (bypassing the Board Results dialog). Remember, you can always click on the "Board Results" button to get the Board Results dialog.
- Non-matching results (win for one player, draw for the other, for instance) are trickier in team tournaments than individual because of the implications for the team vs team result. The technique described in How To: Enter Non-matching Results must be applied to the match itself. You'll end up with one complete set of match results which apply to one team and another which applies to the other. WinTD then calculates the team's result based upon the games in its record alone. Suppose, for instance, that you have a four board match. Each team scores 1.5-1.5 on the three boards unaffected, but the last board is ruled Draw-Loss. On its record, the first team would be 2.0-2.0, and so would be credited with a draw as the match result, while the second team would be 1.5-2.5 and would have a loss. If the ruling is Win-Draw, the first team would win (2.5-1.5) and the second would draw (2.0-2.0).
