Getting Started: Setting Up and Running Tournaments |
The basic steps for running a tournament are listed below. See Getting Started, A Worked Example for a detailed example. For step-by-step help on specific tasks, see the How To... topics.
Preparation
First, decide whether or not you want to store player information on master player files or enter players directly to the tournament. If you are going to use master player lists, begin by adding players to the master file. See Setting Up Players and Teams for more information.
Setting up the Tournament
1.Create a new tournament file by selecting the File>New Tournament... operation. This pops up Tournament Info dialog box, which is used to set the information that applies to the tournament as a whole (such as name and dates). When you are done, this will automatically start Step 2.
2.Create at least one section for the new tournament, using the operation Section>Add (Add/Edit a Section dialog box). Even if your tournament has just one section, you must give the section detail as that is where most of the detail is saved.
3.Enter players into the tournament sections using either of the following methods (see Adding Players to a Tournament for details):
a.If you are using master player files, you can assign players from a Master Player Window (by dragging and dropping, or by using the Master(Player)>Add to section operation).
b.Otherwise, you can add new players directly to the tournament file using Players>Add a Player.
4.You can check players in or out by displaying a Players Window (with Section>List Players) and then using the appropriate Players Menu operation.
5.Use Section>Assign Pairing Numbers to assign pairing numbers to the players. You can skip this step if you're not going to print any pre-tournament wall charts since it will automatically be done when you pair the first round.
6.Set the pairings for the first round using Section>Pair a Round operation.
7.To display the pairings, select one or more sections from the Sections Window and do Section>List Games-Current Round. This displays a list of the games in a new Games Window (one window per section). You can print this list as a pairing sheet using the Reports>Print Window operation.
8.Use Section>List Games-Combined Sections if you want to display the games for several sections together in a single Games Window.
9.To enter game results, first go to the Games Window. You can then enter results by using the Quick Entry Keys, by double-clicking on a game, or by selecting one or more games and doing Games>Enter Scores. The last two methods bring up the Game Result dialog box.
10.Continue pairing rounds, entering results, and so on, until the tournament is complete. Use the operations on the Reports menu to print intermediate and final standings and other information.
Note that you should save your changes periodically using the File>Copy Tournament to... operation. WinTD will also give you a chance to save any changes whenever you quit the program.
